Apr 15, 2020     More Rudder Skeleton - (4 hours)       Category: Empennage
More work on the rudder skeleton. Had to radius a bit more of the top of the rudder horn so that the bottom rib would fit correctly over the top of it and allow all of the holes to align. Had to find the proper platenuts, located in one of the parts bags from the kit. Cleco'd everything together on the bottom end of the rudder spar. Moved on to prepping the top rudder tip rib. Part was bowed and required fluting. This was my first go at fluting so it took a while to get the part flat and all of the holes to line up. Used a length of fishing line to check the hole alignment. Will grab some white dental floss for this check in the future as the fishing line is difficult to see. After about 40 minutes of working on the part, checking the hole alignment and squareness of the flanges to the webbing, I was pretty happy with it. Cleco'd this rib tip to the top of the spar and match drilled a few holes before removing the rib tip. Next you must get the R-713 counterbalance skin front holes to align with the front flange holes from the rib tip. More fluting and after struggling with this for a few minutes, decided to call it a day and do some research before coming back to it next time.

VANS TIP: This would be a much simpler process if the front flange of R-703 did not have any holes already punched into it. Trying to align these two holes, with the two holes from the counterbalanace skin, plus the rest of the holes from the counterbalance skin and the rib tip is very time consuming. Simply leaving these two holes to be drilled using the two holes of the counterbalance skin as a guide would make this a 5 minute process versus much longer trial and error of fluting.

Oh well, build on.
